Are you wondering what the heck being a freelancer even means? If so, this article is for you, friend! I’m going to break down what freelancing is and share with you a bunch of free resources that you can access right NOW so you can decide if it’s a good fit for you!
First, if you’re totally new here, let me just start by saying, “Hey girl! I’m SO freakin’ glad you found me!”
I’m Micala Quinn and I’m a mom on a mission to tell every woman out there about freelancing! So the fact that you’re here right now is HUGE to me because it means this message has reached one more person.
Why am I so passionate about sharing the message that freelancing is an amazing work-from-home option for moms?
Because I know first hand the struggles—guilt, financial stress, worry, unfulfillment—that come when hardworking women like you become mothers and have to decide between leaving their babies, leaving their carriers, losing their income, and losing a part of their purpose.
I was there just four years ago. I felt ALL the feels! I spent countless hours googling “real work from home jobs.” I tried making and selling hair bows—fail. I considered joining an MLM—yuck. I felt lost. I felt like I had no options. I started to lose hope.
I don’t want any other mom to feel like that. I don’t want you to feel like that!
When someone mentioned to me that I should look into freelancing, I was like, “Huh? What’s that? Isn’t that some stuffy, corporate thing? Do I need a special degree for that?”
But I did look. And what I found has completely rocked my world! It rocked my world so much that I have been shouting it from the rooftops—well, blowing up Facebook…same thing—trying to share this option with other moms ever since. Because you don’t need a fancy degree or even any qualifications to get started as a freelancer right now!
So let’s get down to it. Let me tell you a little about freelancing. Then I’ll share all of the awesome resources my team and I have put together to help women, like you, figure out if freelancing is something you want to do.
What Is a Freelancer?
In a nutshell, working as a freelancer means that you own your own business and you loan out your skills and services to companies that need them on a contract, as-needed basis. That contract might be for a one-time project or it might be for regular, ongoing, monthly work—this is a retainer contract.
As a freelancer, you’re self-employed and the boss of your own business. You maintain control of your side of the business, like your rates, which clients you’ll work with, what hours you want to work, and the type of work you’ll do.
The company gets the work that they need done without officially hiring an employee, paying taxes and benefits, and providing a workspace.
It’s a win-win for companies and freelancers!
As a freelancer you could do a wide variety of jobs. I always suggest starting with whatever skills you already have and offering those! Many women start as a general virtual assistant and then decide where to go from there. Some women already have a specific service they want to offer, like graphic design, so they focus on that. The point is, there are clients out there needing every skill imaginable—you just have to find them!

Awesome! I’ve got 5 ways for you to connect with me to learn about becoming a freelancer…plus a bonus step 6 if you’re really ready to get down to business! By the way, you don’t have to do them in order—start with whatever appeals to you!
Step 1 – Join My Free Facebook Group
Are a million questions floating around in your head about how to make freelancing a reality in your life? Do you want to connect with other women who are on this journey also? Join my free Facebook group, The Live Free Podcast Mastermind! This is more than just a group—it’s a community.
The ladies in there are beyond helpful and supportive! And they span all of the phases of freelancing: ladies just considering freelancing, ladies who are starting out their businesses, and established freelancers who are months or years into their businesses and offer a variety of services. So this is a space where you can ask literally anything about this process!
And I’m there, too! I try to pop in and answer questions or give encouragement as often as possible. This is my tribe and I love spending time with them! Feel free to lurk and observe for a while if that’s your style, but if you really want to get some value out of it, ask your questions, tell us what you think, and start connecting with other ladies.
And seriously, ask the hard stuff! What’s holding you back? Why do you think this might not work for you? What are your “What if”s? You don’t have to bear the burden of trying to figure all of that out on your own. Ask away in the group and let me and our great community help!!
Step 2 – Watch My Workshop
You can find my free workshop at becomeaworkathomemom.com. This 2-hour workshop covers Freelancing 101 and what it means to be a freelancer working from home. I also tell about my background, what lead me to freelancing, what I learned along the way, why and how I’ve transitioned to helping other women start freelancing, and the exact process you can follow to set up your own freelance business.
Think you don’t have the skills for freelancing? WRONG!
You do NOT need any specific or special skills to be successful as a freelancer. I talk more about this in the workshop—so check it out!

Step 4 – Listen to My Podcast
Do you listen to podcasts? I LOVE podcasts! I’ve learned a crazy amount just by listening to podcasts. When I discovered my passion for telling women about freelancing, I felt like I wanted to grab a drink from Starbucks and sit down with every woman I met so that I could tell her all about it!
Um…that wasn’t practical of course. So I did the next best thing—I started my own podcast!
The podcast covers stories from ladies who have made their own successful freelancing businesses, interviews with experts, and my tips and life lessons to help you on your way. If you’re just getting started, consider listening to one of these episodes:
- 3 Straightforward Steps to Determine if You Should Pursue Freelancing
- The Essentials You Need to Get Started ASAP!
- How to Move Past Your Fear of Failure and Increase Your Chances of Success
Step 5 – Follow Me on Instagram
I’d love to connect with you on Instagram! You can find me at @micala.quinn where I share a little about the daily goings-on in my life and the latest with my business. Plus, every week a fellow freelancer mom like you, who is in my course, takes over my Instagram account for a day so you can see a different perspective on the freelancing life. This is a great inside peek at what being a freelancer looks like!
*Bonus Step 6 – Join One of My Courses*
Are you really ready to make this happen for you and your family? Do you want to be on the fast track to getting your freelancing business up, running, and profitable?
Then it sounds like you need my course, Overwhelmed to Overbooked!
Now, this isn’t a free course (sorry ladies, I’ve still got to make a living), but I can tell you that by purchasing my course you are investing in yourself. This will light a fire under you to take this seriously, which is good because this can seriously change your life.
But, I’m going to be real—purchasing my course isn’t the only way to launch a profitable freelance business. You can use all of my free resources, do some googling, go the DIY route, and figure it out for yourself. It’s completely possible! All of the information is out there. I know because that’s how I did it at first…and it took me over 7 months to get my first client.
Compare that to the ladies who take my course, many of whom get their first client within a couple months of joining my course. They earn back the cost of the course and then they’re on their way to making a real income and blessing their families.
And that can be you, too!
The course comes with full access to all of the materials immediately, whether you pay in full or sign up for the monthly payment plan.
If that investment is still just too big for you right now, girl I feel you. The money struggle is real. And that’s why I came up with another option! It’s a mini-course called Get Clients Now: Get Booked & Get Paid and it’s a fraction of the cost of my full program.
Whatever route you choose, I hope these resources will help you decide if you want to become a freelancer. And I hope to connect and see you soon in one of my online spaces!
